Environmentally Friendly Roofs

Oct 10, 2022 | Roof Information

In more recent years roofing materials have become more environmentally friendly. Many roofing products now incorporate recycled or salvaged materials that offer energy-saving features. Continue reading to learn more about which materials are environmentally friendly for roofs.

Using a Lighter Coler

Light-colored roofs reflect sunlight and keep your home cooler to cut down on electricity usage in the summer. The lighter the color of your roof, the smoother the surface the better the reflective effect.

Recycled Materials

Recycling plays a huge part in keeping waste out of landfills as well as managing natural resources. Many roofing products nowadays incorporate up to 90% of recycled materials. Rubber shingles can be made from old tires and many metal roofs contain recycled metals. Recycled composite shingles can mimic the look of Spanish tile, slate, or shake. They also resist fire and stand up well to hail or bad weather.

Rubber materials are recyclable to make rubber shingles but an alternative is EPDM Roofing. EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer. It is a synthetic rubber that is used as a roofing material for low slope or flat roofing. EPDM has grown in popularity due to its lower cost, easy installation and replacement, and lighter weight.

Metal roofing is 100% recyclable. Old panels, tear-off metal, and leftover scraps can be reused in future metal products like appliances, cans, plumbing, and more.

Salvaged Shingles

If you’re looking for environmentally friendly roof shingles you can use salvaged ones from old buildings or materials reclaimed from bridges or mills.

Asphalt shingles can be recycled. This type of shingle is the most common and widely used roofing type for years due to its lower cost and ease of installation. In recent years a method of sustainable recycling has been developed. You are now able to recycle shingles at a qualified recycling facility. They can then use the shingles to make the pavement for roads, create new shingles, and turn them into covers for grounds.

Concrete and clay tiles are prominent materials used all around the world. It is most commonly used in warmer climates. They last a long time and can promise decades of protection to a structure. 100% of clay tiles can be reused and recycled. They do not require the use of harmful chemicals and components during production.
