How to Spot Wind Damage

May 9, 2020 | Education

Hurricane season is coming, and non-hurricane severe weather has already been hitting the region. At Southline Roofing, we’re big believers in practicing prevention to stay safe, and the same goes for your home. With that in mind, we wanted to take a moment and share some tips on how to spot wind damage to your roof. Remember, even if you see these signs, you should always contact a trusted roofing professional to fully evaluate the damage and keep your home safe and sound.

Check Indoors

Your roof is an important part of your home’s structure. So it should come as no surprise that you can often find warning signs of roof damage indoors. But what should you look for? Take a look at your attic for dampness indicating moisture has entered. You can also look for discoloration, stains, or peeling on your walls. One other indicator is a sudden surge in energy costs as these could be related to compromised insulation.

Going Outside

Going outside to take a look at your roof can be a dangerous prospect, so we want to start by advising you to not compromise your safety, especially if there is debris or significant damage clearly visible. Those types of damage are obvious, but you can look for other items as well. Missing/damaged/curling shingles, broken gutters, stains, crumbling, and other obvious damage can be an indicator as well.

What Now?

Once you’ve identified these things with your own eyes, it’s time to call in the professionals. Roof damage can be deceptive in its severity, and you need trusted, experienced eyes to help you get it fixed correctly. Never be afraid to call in an expert to inspect your roof and show you how to spot wind damage.
